Programs for Adults
Throughout the year, the Montshire offers programs to adults presented by Museum educators and local experts on phenomena ranging from astronomy to geology to the nature of wildflowers and birds.   | Wednesday, S E P T E M B E R 10 First meeting, Native New England Shrubs |
The many species of native New England shrubs display a wide variation in
size, shape, and color. This course, instructed by Chris Mattrick, will
introduce students to about fifty species growing in this region. Wednesdays, Sept. 10 and 24, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, Sept.
13, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. All sessions
meet at the Museum. Co-sponsored by the New England Wild Flower Society.

Local mushroom expert Faith Hunt will lead a short hike and help you identify which mushrooms are edible and which are better left alone. Learn about the natural history of fungi that grow on the forest floor, and sample some of our edible finds at the end of the program. 1-4 p.m. Members $40, non-members $45. Trees are the dominant plant type of New England, and forests cover most of the land area. This survey course, taught by botanist Brett Engstrom, will address identification and natural history of individual species and ecology. Students will learn to identify native New England trees and their habitats, recognize different aged stands and become familiar with the forest communities. Field trips to a variety of forest types. Sugar maples, American beech, and yellow birch may be what you think of when heading for a walk in the woods. But buckthorn, honeysuckle, and barberry are just a few of the invasive species that are starting to compromise the ecological integrity of our forests. Join expert Sharon Plumb of The Nature Conservancy and learn how to identify invasive species, how they spread, and how and when to remove them. Held in the classroom and outdoors. 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Members $10, non-members $12.
